Some Infertility Facts in India

Childlessness and infertility is a growing problem in the world today. India has a population of over 1.2 billion and the number of Indians suffering from infertility is huge. An estimated one in seven couple in India have fertility problem and mostly there are cases of unexplained infertility. It is estimated that 10 per cent of the general population suffers from some form of infertility. Of every 100 couples reporting to fertility clinics, 40 per cent are cases of male infertility, 50 per cent are of women, and the remaining 10 per cent of both partners being infertile.

Infertility Figures- a cause of concern

Infertility rates are increasing rapidly in the Indian cities as 16% of married women are childless in the cities, according to studies. The latest reports suggest that 50% is the jump in infertility in urban India since 1981. As far as male infertility rates are concerned, 10% of young males have severe defects in sperm quality, quantity and production. 6% of male infertility and 14% of ovarian failures are due to chromosomal abnormalities. 90 million Indians suffer from erectile dysfunction. 20 to 30% is the growth rate of the infertility sector in India. 40,000 cycles of infertility treatment are done nationwide now, up from 7,000 in 2000.

Treatment Procedures

In Vitro Fertilization is one of the most common procedures that are being done to couples to have children. Such procedures are enormously essential for some couples in whom conventional therapies have been ineffective. According to studies, an estimated 8 percent of infertile couples opt for medical intervention involving the use of advanced Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) in India.
