ICSI stands for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. The procedure is a specialized form of in vitro fertilization in which a single sperm is directly injected into a mature egg. It is used to help the patients who have very low sperm count or poor sperm quality. One or two of the resulting embryos can be transferred to your womb in the same way as in a conventional IVF cycle.
During the ICSI treatment, the sperms are injected in the egg by using a special needle. Special tools and equipments are used to perform activities like picking up the best sperms which are then inserted in the egg. Both the activities are very critical and complicated and needs to be very careful as it is a delicate procedure too. The sperms are injected to the core of the eggs and this process required high perfection and precision. Special hormonal injections are given to the female partner as the uterus needs to be prepared for the pregnancy. The success ratio is around 75 to 80 percent.
ICSI treatment is recommended for patients when there is a low sperm count, or has poor sperm motility (movement), or high number of abnormal sperm. If a male partner has zero sperm count, the sperm is retrieved surgically in those cases.
It is important to understand that there are two aspects of success. The first one is called the fertilization rate and the other is known as pregnancy success rate. In the case of fertilization rate, the process of fertilization is considered. There are 40-50 percent chances of a successful fertilization after performing the ICSI process. The rate is significantly high on any parameter.
The pregnancy until the childbirth is known as the pregnancy success rate. IVF using ICSI method is more successful as compared to IVF using the other method. In case of ICSI method, the women are more fertile, the overall health and fitness is better, average quantity of eggs is good and the age is relatively less. The success rate is higher due to these reasons. In some cases of unexplained infertility that lowers the chances of successful pregnancy using ICSI.
There are some other aspects too. IVF using ICSI is a complex procedure and to achieve success, it becomes important to apply all the skills and expertise for achieving it. Another thing that denotes the success is the quality of the treatment, laboratory equipments and skill of the team who are performing this treatment.
