Stages of Labor in pregnancy

Once you become pregnant and reach the third trimester, you may want to explore more about labor in pregnancy. The labor phase in pregnant women can be categorized into three phases: Early, Active and Transitional.

Early Labor

Early labor phase lasts for the longest duration and causes less pain. The contractions during early labor increase over hours to weeks. At this time, the cervix expands upto 3 cm.

Symptoms indicating Early Labor:

  • Mild or moderations contractions last for 30-40 seconds
  • Backache with each contraction.
  • Menstrual-like cramps.
  • Pressure on lower abdomen.
  • Digestion issues.
  • Feeling of nausea.
  • Mucus discharge with drops of blood.

Active Labor

Active Labor is a condition that lasts for not more than three hours. The contractions are stronger and longer than in early labor. In active labor, the cervix dilates upto 7 centimeters. If you are having active labor, you should rush to the hospital as your delivery is expected to happen sooner.

Symptoms indicating Early Labor:

  • Increased pain during contractions
  • Increase in back ache
  • Heaviness in Legs
  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Increased mucus discharge with more amount of blood
  • Rupture of membranes

Transitional Labor

This is the shortest and most intense phase of labor. Your cervix dilates up to 10 centimeters and the contractions can last for more than a minute. This phase is the onset of delivery stage. At the time of transitional labor, you should stay completely normal between each contraction and allow the contractions to push your baby towards the birth canal.

Symptoms indicating Transitional Labor:

  • Too much pain in the abdominal area or lower back
  • Increased blood discharge
  • Chills or sweaty feelings
  • Cramps in legs and back
  • Tremble sensations in legs
  • Vomiting sensations
