28 Dec After IVF, Indian Couples embark on Surrogacy Journey
Indian couples who have been unable to conceive with IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies; find it interesting to embark on a surrogacy journey to explore their parenthood dreams. Not many couples are aware that the child born though surrogacy is genetically related to the biological parents. In this blog, we will describe how surrogacy process can be helpful for childless Indian couples so as to have a baby and enjoy the joy of parenthood.
What is Surrogacy?
Surrogacy is the process in which the mother and father’s genetic material is placed in another woman’s womb (surrogate) who carries and gives birth therefore essentially it is their baby, genetically and is nurtured by the surrogate’s womb who handover the baby to the rightful parents. In other words, it is a method of assisted reproduction carried out by the doctors through a procedure called in vitro fertilization wherein an embryo created from gametes of both the parents, implanted into the uterus of surrogate, and she carries the baby to term. A surrogate mother is compensated to become pregnant for giving birth to a child to whom she has no genetic link. Thus the baby born to a surrogate mother is genetically related to the biological parents.
Why couples consider surrogacy?
In some cases, a woman is not able to carry a pregnancy due to some medical conditions like uterine cancer, infections in uterus, endometriosis or other issues. With the rapid advancement in medical science particularly in the field of assisted reproduction, surrogacy offers a solution to these women to have a child. When couples embark on a surrogacy journey, they choose another woman, in medical terminology known as gestational carrier who will carry the pregnancy on their behalf by using the gametes of genetic parents. Furthermore, according to law, surrogacy is allowed for Indian couples and intended parents can choose their surrogate according to their choice.

During pregnancy, these surrogates, live with other surrogates and are being provided all the essential facilities. In some cases, they are being treated of severe diseases which they don’t aware of. This is why childless couples embark on a surrogacy in India because:
- Great faith in the skill of Indian doctors and their results.
- Technical competence.
- Woman who acts as surrogates are simple, do not drink or smoke or take drugs and are complaint to doctor’s orders.
- In this process the woman’s uterus remains intact; she does not lose any organ. In fact, it can be compared to blood donation, where blood once given another person reforms and benefits both the giver and taker.

Prospective parents pay for the accommodation, healthcare and food for their surrogate as part of the surrogacy package. After the embryo transfer, the fertility clinics provide best accommodation for all surrogates mothers where they start living with other surrogates till delivery. They are being provided all the essential facilities including kitchen, washroom, TV, bedroom etc and their families are also allowed to visit them.
