Condition of Dyspareunia in women

Dyspareunia is a medical term of recurrent pain before, during or post intercourse in women caused due to medical or psychological reasons. In rare cases, it can be observed in men too. Women with dyspareunia may experience pain in the vagina, clitoris or labia. If you observe persistent pain during intercourse, visit a gynecology clinic for timely evaluation and management.

Causes of Dyspareunia:

  • Vaginal dryness.
  • Endometriosis.
  • Allergic reaction to clothing.
  • Inflammation of the vaginal opening area.
  • Urinary tract, vaginal yeast or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
  • Skin diseases affecting the vaginal area.
  • Thinning of vaginal lining in post menopausal women.
  • Psychological trauma caused by sexual abuse.

Diagnosis Protocol of Dyspareunia:

Your doctor will take a brief medical, sexual history along with physical examinations to identify the cause of pain. The doctor will also ask you about the area, length and duration of pain and if there was ever a time you had painless intercourse, or if you have always had dyspareunia. In case of first-time mothers who are breastfeeding, it may result in vaginal dryness and dyspareunia.

During physical examination, your doctor may examine your vaginal walls to look for dryness, infection, genital warts or any type of inflammation present. He may also do a pelvic examination for any endometriosis or pelvic abnormalities.

In case of psychological trauma, your doctor may advise you to seek medical advice from a counselor.

Closing Thoughts

Now that you what Dyspareunia is all about, you should aware of how to prevent it from occurring. If you are having dyspareunia because of vagina yeast infection, you should keep your vaginal area clean and dry and wear clean and loose clothing. You should always practice safe intercourse to avoid sexually transmitted diseases. If you have dyspareunia, I would recommend visiting a best gynaecologist because the underlying cause can be a severe disorder which needs to be tackled at the earliest. If the disease is treated in time then dyspareunia is likely to disappear in sometime.
