Male fertility is done by the simpler methods. It is estimated approximately one-third of infertility cases come from male partner. When a couple is unable to conceive at least for a year, both partners asked to go through some basic tests that will define their problems and the possible treatments.
Types of Male fertility tests
As far as the male fertility test is concerned, semen analysis is the most common procedure. Fertility clinics have arranged a special room for patients where sperm is collected into a jar. The sperm is then examined under a microscope in order to evaluate the count, shape, appearance, and mobility of the sperm.
What does low sperm count mean ?
Low sperm count is one of the leading causes of male fertility. It always takes two to make a baby and a man has a leading role in pregnancy. The minimum sperm count required to get your partner pregnant is 20 million+ sperm per milliliter. According to the World Health Organization, a sperm concentration of 20 million per milliliter, and a total of at least 40 million per ejaculate, is needed for optimum fertility. Chances of getting your partner pregnant decreases with decreasing sperm counts.
Some of the common abnormalities of sperm as :
Aspermia: absence of semen
Hypospermia: low semen volume
Hyperspermia: high semen volume
Asthenozoospermia: poor sperm motility
Teratozoospermia: sperm carry more morphological defects than usual
Necrozoospermia: all sperm in the ejaculate are dead
Leucospermia: a high level of white blood cells in semen
Aazoospermia: complete absence of sperm
Oligospermia: low sperm concentration
How Semen Analysis is measured ?
The characteristics measured by semen analysis are only some of the factors in semen quality. In order to determine the normal sperm count, the technician will also be checking to see if the sperm concentration is above or below 20 million sperm cells per milliliter of ejaculation fluid.
For patients who are found to have low sperm count, the fertility specialist will probably test the blood testosterone, FSH, LH and prolactin levels. Nowadays, there are a number of supplements available to enhance and improve sperm factors such as count, motility and morphology.
However, if the medical history, physical examination, and semen analysis of the male partner are normal, the focus will be shifted towards to the female partner.
