When is the Right Time to Attempt the Next IVF Cycle?

All the couples that embrace artificial insemination often find themselves in the dilemma that whether the procedure will turn out well or not? And it is common for them to have such thoughts hovering over their head but, what about those who have received a failure in their very first IVF cycle? Will they ever trust the procedure again? Or is it right to think about the second attempt after facing a failure?

These are few common questions which the couples face after the failure of their first IVF cycle. They are not wrong at their place after all they have invested all their time and money along with their hopes in the procedure by trusting their doctor. Now what is the right thing to do? After experiencing such a devastating and troublesome period of their life with infertility, the resulting treatment they have received is unacceptable for them.

The very first thing they should do is consult their doctor and should ask the specialist that what could have gone wrong with the procedure? And if they are not satisfied with the treatment provided to them then they should take a second opinion from a new doctor who could help them in a better way.

There may be plenty of reason for the failure of the cycle but detecting them is the most important thing so that one can prevent such failure in future. Some of them are as follows:

  • The embryo transferred into the uterus is abnormal or incompetent for the pregnancy.
  • Implantation dysfunction that restrains the embryo to attach with the uterine lining.
  • Technical difficulties during the embryo transfer procedure.

The most common of them is embryo abnormalities and it may be prevented via Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH) or Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGS) which enables the specialist to distinguish the embryo which are competent and are free from chromosomal defects.

The success rates of the second cycle depend on these enlisted factors:

  • Age of the female partner
  • Quality and quantity of egg
  • Quality and quantity of sperm
  • IVF ovarian stimulation result
  • Quality of laboratory
  • Expertise of the specialist who is performing the procedure of egg retrieval and embryo transfer.
  • Quantity of eggs retrieved
  • Uterine environment
  • Embryo quality
  • Genetic and chromosomal condition of the embryo

These are the few factors that do affect the IVF cycle and if the couple is planning for a second cycle then they should consider all the above factors and work on them accordingly. The specialist may ask to change your fertility drugs or use a donor for either egg or sperm and might even change the dosage or type of medication to enhance the growth of uterine lining prior to embryo transfer.
